Hellfest 2022 Review

 A hell of an experience.

After 2 years of intermittent lockdown and virus spreading, it was time for the bands to hit the stage and for their fans to headbang in front of them and what a better place for that than Clisson, France, the small town of Hellfest, the biggest metal festival in France and one of the biggest in Europe.
Even if the tickets are sold out in a few hours after their online offering, I had the chance to purchase a ticket through the official app 'Tickets Swap' months later and as I'm living 30 minutes away from Clisson, I couldn't miss the chance to go see many of the bands I love.
I will mention in the following, some of the bands I've watched:

  • The Great Old Ones:  A Post Black Metal band from Bordeaux - France. Recommended.
  • Opeth: the great progressive metal Swedish band. Although, I'm not a big fan but I found their live show much better than album recordings. I thought that their music was more calm, but I was surprised by the growling of Mikael Akerfeldt.
  • Rotting Christ: The Greek legends with their black metal infused with oriental melodies. Essential.
  • Primordial: The best show for the first day was with the Irish black/folk (Celtic) legends, with their specific lyrical style, the hegemonic presence of Alan "Nemtheanga" and Irish flags in the crowd.
  • Five Finger Death Punch: I like their groovy/alternative metal style, but I found their live show an imitation of Slipknot style. I didn't like their lead vocalist Ivan Moody and his wardrobe's changing constantly, but their guitarists are astonishing.
  • Deftones: I'm a big fan of this nu metal band, but I didn't find the live show as per my expectations. Chino has always his own performer style.
  • Heaven Shall Burn: The best show for me in the second day. In the afternoon with 40 Celsius degrees,  firefighters were spraying the fans who were in front of the stage. Circle pits, Walls of death and heavy riffs accompany the left-wing lyrics of this German metalcore / deathcore group.

  • Megadeth: One of the Thrash big 4 with their legendary lead vocalist Dave Mustaine's sound and his guitar playing.  To satisfy those  who couldn't watch Metallica in the 2nd weekend.
  • Sepultura: A great mistake by the organizers was to program the Brazilians on the Altar stage. This show deserves to be on a mainstage, as a respect to the history and the big crowd, as well as to the performance of Derick Green and his bandmates.
  • Ghost: Not a big fan of the Swedish rockers and their pope/s, but their melodies and their eccentric on-stage presence is worth-watching.
  • Lacuna Coil: the Italian Gothic leaders with the beautiful Cristina Scabbia offered a good start of the 3rd day and up to the expectations.

  • Regarde les hommes tomber:  An emerging post black metal band from Nantes-France. Also recommended for those who don't know them yet.
  • Counterparts: While the Ukrainians Jinjer were playing the mainstage, my first trip to the Warzone was to watch this Canadian hardcore band and it seems I'm gonna be listening to their music more frequently. A fine discovery along with the Americans Knocked Loose.
  • Dying Fetus & Misery Index: Known for their technical death metal/ Grindcore and their left-wing lyrics, their shows were energetic with a continuous crowd surfing in the Dying Fetus show and an continuous Circle pit in the Misery Index show.
  • Korn:  As its my 2nd time, seeing them, I watched only some songs of the Korn show who was heavily crowded as expected and its always a great opportunity to see Jonathan Davis performance.
  • Walls of Jericho: In parallel to the French post-black metal band Alcest, I had to choose the Walls of Jericho breathtaking show. The metalcore band with their female led vocalist Candace Kucsulain ruled the warzone. Also, a fine discovery of the festival.
  • Gojira :  The final act of the first weekend was with the French most known metal band in history Gojira with their visuals show and their eco-friendly lyrics.

Apart from that I couldn't watch  completely the Judas Priest and Deep Purple for older fans. But in the end, due to logistical reasons, unfortunately I missed final concert by the black metal legends Watain.

As a conclusion, Hellfest a pilgrimage that every metal fan should do.

Fukpig - One Nation Under One Eye

They're all in this together
And still you think you're safe

Our leaders conspire
They lead us to die
One nation under one eye

I'm sick of being lied to
And I won't take it anymore!

Our leaders conspire
They lead us to die
Leading our rights to the slaughter
Fuck your evil new world order

The Meads of Asphodel - Wonderful World

 (Louis Armstrong Cover)

I see newborn graves
Dirt dimmed with steam
Open womb flesh
Death and disease

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see ethnic cleansing
Pain beyond belief
Whole nations murdered
Sorrow and grief

And I think to myself what a wonderful world

The silhouettes of murder
So pretty in the sky
Where rapists stair and wonder
At children passing by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying 'How do you do'
But they're really saying
Hey, Fuck you!

I see men talking peace
Words full of shit
Eyes welled with war
Poison and deceit

And I think to my self what a wonderful world

Yeah
I think to my self, what a wonderful world.
Oh yeah.

Profecium - Inquisidor Imperial

Inquisidor imperial
Que profanas las vidas
Con hambre
Sangre y dolor
Te proclamas amo y señor
Imponiendo tu santa religión
De tu mundo el capital
De tu mando se dicta muerte o vida
También obedece al poder superior
Torturas
Ignorancia la represión
La explotación
de milones de obreros que entregan
sus vidas por unas migajas de pan
Feudalismo
Burguesía
Capital
Imperialismo
La herramienta es la dictadura
Todo el sistema anular
Maldito sea
El sistema explotador
Maldito sean sus practicantes
Levantemos el fuego
Por la misión del poder infernal
En la guerra contra el imperio celestial
El proletariado
Debe clavar su daga
Esperando dar en el corazón
Del dios capital

Translation:

imperial Inquisitor
That secular lives
hungry
Blood and pain
Proclamations you lord and master
Imposing your holy religion
Capital of your world
From your command is issued death or life
Also due to higher power
torture
Ignorance repression
the exploitation
milion workers from delivering
their lives for a few crumbs of bread
feudalism
bourgeoisie
capital
imperialism
The tool is the dictatorship
The entire ring system
damn
The system operator
Cursed be their practitioners
Lift up your fire
For the mission of the infernal power
In the war against the celestial empire
the proletariat
You should stick your dagger
Hoping to hit the heart
God of Capital

Darkthrone - I am the Working Class

21 years of minimum wage
Got no problems with manual labour

You stepped up in the 90s, wanna show me how
Well, I don't need no fuckin' favour

[refrain:]
I am the working class!
All day
So I don't have to
See your face

I am the working class!
Discipline
The daybreak is when
I begin

I am the working class!
Each day
I bust my bones to
Get paid

I am the working class!
Damn straight
The daily grind is
My fate

Through 7 seas of alcohol
And a jail of dank depression
Well, I turned my back and where are you now?
...and I've bucked up for that recession

[refrain]

Fukpig - Fascist Moron

Jackboots stamping to an imaginary beat
Look at the steps that you're following
Fascist moron
No one's impressed by your out of date beliefs
The you've been gladly swallowing
Fascist moron

The filth that you're breeding
Fascist moron
The shit that you're preaching
Fascist moron
The lies that you believe in
Fascist moron
Will be the death of you

Using their power to intimidate the weak
Just an army of racist dickheads
Fascist moron
Your unchallenged hate laid bare for the shit that it is
Nazi fucking weakeners
Fascist moron

Panopticon - Flag Burner, Torch Bearer

Flag Burner, Torch Bearer

Rise up, spirit of my ancestry.
Fill me with vigilance again.
No longer will we watch from our posts.
Torches of war burn this eve.
For those who possess undue power lurk in our midst,
with innocent blood on their sleeves.
Their slaves labor into nothingness,
lost in the abyss of factories.
The gods are replaced with commodities
unfit to occupy their thrones.
Their rightful place.
We bow our heads to mere currency.
Our apathy allows capitalism to enslave.
The price of our freedom is the essence of our slavery.
The master I've served will never repay me.
There's poison in the communion wine.
In this theocracy we will all die.
Worship false idols.
Currency in our veins...
The bow breaks in this ship of fools.
Capitalism enslaves
Paid in blood......
Tonight, all flags must burn in place of steeples.
Autonomy must return into the hands of the people.
This is war on our oppressors.
The concept of capitalism robs us of our very nature.
Destroys our tribes, torn apart our families.
Gagged and bound, we slit the throat of the henchman
then laugh at the contradiction.
Falsify our inspiration, numbed by media.
The tools for complacency market our fucking rebellion.
Behold, the chains of profit.
There is nothing sacred!
We are convinced that we are free because we are not starving.
But our souls starve for something more than profits and convenience.
We starve for truth, we starve for earth,
we starve for freedom and untainted skies.
How long will we swallow the shit that they feed us?
How long will they rape our ears with their lies?
I will not surrender my heart to anyone but me.
There are only a few things that I believe:
that people are born free
and slavery is murder,
property is theft
and government is tyranny:
anarchy is liberty.
Liberation!
Tonight all flags must burn in place of steeples.
Autonomy must return to the hands of the people!

Jarost Marksa - Under The Red Banner

There can be no freedom
While the state exists

So comrades, march on
For the people's revolution

The bringer of democracy
Workers, free yourselves
From the chains of capitalism
To end all exploitation

Our unity is our strength
The end of class antagonism

The victory of communism
Shall heal all of our wounds

No religions, no races
No countries, no classes
To separate us anymore
Unity, at last

The power of the people
Communist triumph

Ideas, immortal

We pledge our lives
To the red banner

Bow to none

There can be no freedom
While the state exists

So comrades, march on
For the people's revolution

The bringer of democracy
Workers, free yourselves
From the chains of capitalism
To end all exploitation

Our unity is our strength
The end of class antagonism

The victory of communism
Shall heal all of our wounds

No religions, no races
No countries, no classes
To separate us anymore
Unity, at last

Our oppressors will fall
Just like the Romans
Turn against your rulers
No longer shall we suffer

United in friendship
United in labour
We face the greatest struggle
Dark days lie ahead

The hands of the people
Bring the revolution
With fire we cleanse
Those who oppose us

We march under the crimson banner
The red flag of the people

Victory is within our reach
Cheerful, united and strong

The unbreakable will of the people
Forever free and undying

No leaders, no masters
We are the ruling class
